The Store Show, hosted by Asad Raza. Labyrinth Books, Princeton, NJ
A box of Swedish dream cookies with accompanying instructions for actions created for The Store Show, an ad hoc variation on Asad Raza's The Home Show, hosted by Asad Raza, with D. Graham Burnett, Jeff Dolven, and Brooke Holmes.
“Drömmar”, Swedish for dreams, are a product of transformation. As the story goes, a cookie’s humble ingredients impart a putrefying odour as they are are mixed in a royal kitchen. The unbelieving take flight, horrified by the smell. But one sympathetic princess remains, trusting in the potential of process and change. She does not throw away the dough, despite its abject qualities. Rather, she observes patiently as the drömmar bake. Their sickening odour (caused by baker’s ammonia, a precursor to modern baking powder) quickly fades, replaced by an intoxicating aroma of sugar, butter and vanilla. What results is the most airy, delicate and munificent cookie in all the kingdom. A dream is born, based on a lesson in relation making: things are not always as they initially seem.
